Warriors busy on Day One of Free Agency

Steve Fryer, Garrett McIntosh, Joey Lucchesi and Christian Mazzone sign! Joel McCready, Owen Barker and Colton Porter re-sign.

The Vancouver Warriors have had a busy opening day of National Lacrosse League Free Agency, signing seven players to contracts.

G Steve Fryer has signed on with the Warriors after spending this past season with the expansion Rochester Knighthawks. Fryer, 30, from Brampton, Ontario, has also made stops with Colorado, Toronto and Philadelphia. Fryer has appeared in 18 games over his career and has a goals-against-average of 10.11, a save percentage of .794 and a record of 2-6.

“Steve Fryer is an experienced veteran in the NLL,” comments Warriors Head Coach Chris Gill.  “He has held teams to low single digit totals on numerous occasions. We are excited to have Steve complement Eric Penney as our goalie tandem.”

D/T Garrett McIntosh also chose Vancouver as his destination. McIntosh comes home, as he grew up in Coquitlam, BC, after spending his first five seasons in the NLL with the Calgary Roughnecks, and his last two with the San Diego Seals.

Mcintosh, 31, has posted 19 goals and 23 assists for 42 points in 95 NLL games, grabbed 285 loose balls and caused 47 turnovers in his NLL career so far.

“Garrett is a needed big body for the Warriors who plays a hard-nosed, defensive style of lacrosse,” remarks Gill.  “Garrett brings veteran leadership to our team and can read the play well, scoop up loose balls and transition quickly.”

D/T Joey Lucchesi, 24, from Lake Tapps, Washington, comes to Vancouver. Lucchesi scored 63 goals and added 15 assists while scooping 42 loose balls in his most recent season with the Aurora University Spartans.

“Joey has speed to burn and fits in with our philosophy of moving the ball quickly,” comments General Manager Dan Richardson. “Joey’s athleticism will be a nice addition to our team.  We look forward to seeing him compete at our training camp.”

F Christian Mazzone joins the Warriors after playing this season with Archers of the Premier Lacrosse League. Mazzone, 25, from Stony Brook NY, calls Everett, Washington, home. Last season, Christian played with the Atlanta Blaze of Major League Lacrosse and scored 33 goals.

“Christian is a proven goal scorer who will go to the dirty areas,” says Richardson. “Mazzone has a high Lacrosse IQ with an accurate shot that we believe will transfer well to the NLL.”

Vancouver also re-signed F Joel McCready and defender Owen Barker, while extending D Colton Porter through the 2021-22 season.
